mostly identical to canon wowieee
product of imperial research into magic; instead of espers, was augmented by ether extracted from other humans
basically raised by cid the scientist + was used in the magitek experimentation at young age (no idea who or where her biofamily is)
didn't attain the rank of general but definitely Some rank of renown with command of a unit - something equivalent to the canon unprovoked attack on maranda and conscripting the survivors into the army
briefly investigated figaro family as possible rebel sympathizers; dismissed the case at the time given the current heir is a useless dandy
defected for ??? reason (canon breaking point was the poisoning of doma, ??find out how long the servant's gate has been in use in-universe, "empire resting on the backs of mass slave labour" is a pretty goddamn big breaking point, keep things vague in case a kefka exists lmao), was imprisoned and awaiting trial + almost certain execution
freed during the chaos of a corsair raid (details vague also in case a locke exists)
didn't join up at first; fled with cid onto an unknown island at ocean-level to try and live away from the empire - both of them got injured during the raid?
(??potential connection with sabin somewhere in here given he's off punching sharks with vargas in this timeframe??)
~a year passes, presumed awol or dead
cid dies of his illness, celes despairs, leaves the island, falls in with the corsairs
some potential for uncertainty that people think she's a double agent
need to think more about what she does in elysium given she's theoretically identifiable but also i think her singing as "maria" at the starlit stage is fun

Character Name: Celes Chere
AU or OU: AU
Canon Point: [N/A for AU]
Character Age: 19
AU Description:
The broad strokes of Celes's backstory are about the same as canon, with the major differences being the affiliation with the Varschein Empire instead of the Gestahlian Empire, as well as what happens to her when she defects.
Similar to canon, she was taken young from her family to be used as a child soldier and test subject for a military experiment. Said experimentation was part of a research initiative for alternate sources of ether -- in this case, whether it was possible to use expendable serfs (or servants, or better yet, enemy rebels) as walking ether batteries. A number of soldiers, including Celes, were imbued with ether forcibly extracted from human "donors", many of whom died from shock or aftereffects of the transfusion.
Celes has no real memory of her family of origin: The closest thing to family was the scientist in charge of the experiment, Cid Del Norte Marguez, who named her after a cultivar of flower he

Powers and Abilities:
- Magic: Celes has an affinity with ice magic (summoning ice and blizzards, freezing targets, etc), as well as a small array of healing magic. She is capable of magical teleportation (per game guidelines, it's limited to a 100m range and to locations she can visualize).
- Imperial Soldier: As a soldier, she's undergone weapons training and live combat with swords, daggers, and maces, and she's led troops into battle -- though at this point in time, she has no interest or motivation to take command while under the Corsairs.
Runic Blade: Her specialty, a counterspell capable of absorbing and nullifying nearby ether into her sword (cancelling someone's spellcasting), where she can store or channel it into her own spells. While using Runic, she can't do anything else, such as prepare another spell or attack, without stopping what she's doing. Additionally, proximity and timing are important factors -- Runic is just as capable of nullifying an ally's magic as it is an enemy's, depending on who's closer or who started casting or channelling their ether first.
While it can nullify magic, it's not guaranteed to work on all possible magic (i.e. a particularly powerful spell or mage could override it). I'm also going to say that someone with ether-manipulating abilities can interfere with how Runic works.
Runic falls under the "Power Suppression" guidelines, which is to say it has a 10-ft radius area of effect and does not affect conventional weapons.
Desired Faction:
Either Flotsam or Elysium, no major preference. She would be a more standard combatant with Flotsam, while in Elysium, I envision her using her experience in the imperial army for their intelligence work, although that being said, her being a fugitive (even one presumed dead) would limit her ability to move freely. I do like the idea of her in Elysium in disguise at the Starlit Stage as the singer "Maria", even though Celes would hate it, hahaha.
